Quantum AI for food security and student wellbeing
Food Ladder, CSIRO Data61, University of Southern Queensland
A four year CSIRO Industry PhD that Farina leads with colleagues at CSIRO and UniSQ. The project designs quantum reinforced algorithms for resource efficient hydroponics in Food Ladder's school greenhouses and studies how time in green spaces affects student wellbeing.
Research model2025
Q-VAE: quantum down sampling filter
CSIRO Data61
A hybrid variational autoencoder with quantum encoding in the encoder and a convolutional decoder. It produced lower Fréchet Inception Distance scores than classical baselines on MNIST and USPS, with the code released openly.
Research model2023
Quantum pre-processing filter
UniSQ, CSIRO Data61
A four qubit feature extraction circuit placed in front of a neural network. Developed through her PhD, it improved image classification accuracy and was later shown to help with small sample binary classification.
Architecture2021 to 2022
Quantum computing for IoT cryptography
Co-authored with collaborators including Dr Shahab Abdulla
Hybrid and enhanced architectures to address public key cryptographic issues in Internet of Things devices in a world where quantum computers threaten classical encryption.
EngineeringBefore the PhD
Grid computing recovery at CERN
CERN, Switzerland
As an intern during her master's studies she designed and built an automatic recovery tool and a log analyser for grid computing infrastructure.
AlgorithmBefore the PhD
Hazard alert routing for sensor networks
Master's research
A routing algorithm that alerts people to nearby hazards and lets a connected system act immediately, for example triggering sprinklers when sensors detect smoke or fire in the field.
